Uncool Mom at home with Milo published in ROIDOX Mag.

Shot at home with her very own wardrobe Lily and I made some magic and got it published in ROIDOX Mag. We featured her brand new kitty Milo who I pulled a few feet of string from as he was playing around our feet during the shoot.

Vogue Italia and a Skill Share course

It has been a busy week here at Chez Flinn. Marketing emails have been going out. We celebrated our 9th Vogue publication and are putting the finishing touches on our first SkillShare course of 2022.

We also had an amazing studio shoot with a textile artist, thanks to Doris Land and Ronnie for such a fun shoot.

The new year is off to a big start and I have got some big goals for this year.

What are some of yours?

Let's take a look at some lights.

I live in a beautiful neighbourhood in Vancouver, nestled right next to the ocean. It is the West End and I love it. I have lived here for 8 years, half the time I have spent in Vancouver and I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon. My apartment is a perfect live-work studio for my work and I am nestled in a variety of outdoor backdrops that you can see in a variety of my work.

I wanted to post my gratitude for this holiday season and share with you some of the lights that are placed in my neighbourhood every single year. I took a slow shutter abstract approach, I love when lights make patterns in an image.

Please enjoy this winter interlude of the lights in my community. My neighbourhood.

What do you call two hat tricks in a row?

What I mean is that I have had my 6th image published in Vogue Italia.

So is that two hat tricks in a row? Or is it just a sixth time?

Doesn’t roll off the tongue like other times but it has me over the moon with excitement.

I worked with Farah from Charles Stuart International, outside at a safe social distance to make some urban feeling images after being inspired by the latest All Saints spring 2021 campaign shot by two of my favourite photographers.

The series is called where the summer is because summer is here in Vancouver and it is fabulous outside right now. I shot a roll of expired Agfa Optima 120mm film with my medium format Bronica Zenzia camera and 80mm lens. I love that camera right down to the vintage luggage strap that hangs it around my neck as I wander around during shoots. It is no Hasselblad (the dream-hello universe, can you hear me? My birthday is July 5) but it certainly does in a pinch. What do you think of the flawed colour photos? I love the flaws, for me, they are the heartbeat of photography.

Back to you guys, how are things?

I am in the cue for my second shot and that has me feeling pretty hopeful. I want to hear from you, are you hopeful too?

Mind blown, two images published on the same day.

Vogue Italia accepted both of my submissions this Monday and I think you may still be able to hear me squealing with glee.

The squeal is the fact that the model, Saina is wearing my designs. Yes, you read that right so she is wearing my continuous line illustrations, transferred on to thrifted clothing. I style all of my shoots and this one, I had this in mind and I choose these images specifically to post to Vogue. Every Monday morning I submit two images to a portal on Vogue and now I have a portfolio up there.

Pinch me.

Finding new lines

I have been drawing by hand, felt stuck with the size of the iPad and procreate so I moved back to what feels good. Paper and a fine point marker or a medium point pen.

I am thinking beyond having people draw a self-portrait with their eyes closed as a mural concept and how could I go direct and create the work on the wall myself. How can I show all of the shapes, sizes, colours and ethnicities of all of the people we see in our everyday life.

I have given myself the exercise to use continuous lines and fill the pages of the sketchbook. All 52 of them, so far I am on page 23 and working at them every day. The lines feel good, it feels good to pick up the pen and make the contact with the page again.

How are you guys moving through this third wave?
I would love to hear from you, let’s connect and help each other not feel so alone.
